One Communities Commitment to Combating Childhood Obesity
Virginia Beach Park and Recreation Out-of-School Time Programs joined with the Virginia Beach Health Department in a grant opportunity to combat childhood obesity. Part of the grant included supplying all 65 After School Sites with a Skillastics Activity kit and training. Virginia Beach OOST believes Skillastics® is a fun way to help youth get the recommended amount of high level physical fitness activity each day while increasing their skill level and confidence. If youth feel “skilled confident” in their physical fitness ability, they are more inclined to continue with healthy habits and routines.
· Ensure youth in their program get at least 30-45 minutes of high intensity physical exercise in programs operating under 4 hours
· Ensure youth in their program get at least 1-1 1/2 hours of high intensity physical exercise in programs operating more than 4 hours.
· Make it FUN and ensure all youth are able to participate
· Build Skillastics® into a daily part of their program format
A pre and post test will be conducted with each child to help measure any impact on their fitness habits and perceptions. Site staff will also log the day, time, activity and number of kids who participate daily in Skillastics®/high level physical fitness activities.
Training was conducted June 1, 2013. The initial reaction from students and staff has been tremendously positive. The staff is thrilled at the ease of setting up and teaching Skillastics®, and the students are really enjoying participating.
