Getting Ready for the School Year

I used to hate it when the school ads started showing up in July and I felt like it was still the middle of the summer!  But, I know August means school is starting for many of you.  While I hope you can still enjoy some summer fun, it’s time to start thinking about a new school year.  Although it’s not a new book, I would encourage you to get a copy of the book “Fish!” by Lundin, Paul and Christensen.  It’s a quick and easy book to read and has some great ideas for how to “catch the energy and release the potential”.

Here are the four main ideas that come from the book.

  1. PLAY!  Play is not just an activity; it’s a state of mind that brings new energy to the tasks at hand and sparks creative solutions.
  2. MAKE THEIR DAY!  When you “make someone’s day” (or even moment) through a small kindness, you can turn even routine encounters in special memories.
  3. BE THERE!  The glue in our humanity is in being fully present for one another.
  4. CHOOSE YOUR ATTITUDE!  When you look for the worst you will find it everywhere.  When you learn you have the power to choose, you can look for the best and find opportunities you never imagined possible.

Hopefully you can put at least one of these concepts into practice with your colleagues as well as your students and it will help you have a great year!  Be proud of what you do and know that what you do is an important part the school day for your students!!
