Los Angeles BEST Fit After-School Program enjoying Fitness Skillastics® at all 172 sites.

Edith Ballesteros-Vargas, BEST Fit Director stresses that LA's BEST is a firm believer in the development of the whole child. Through the BEST Fit program, they promote kinesthetic learning given that physical education plays a significant role in the student's health and well-being. Recently, LA's BEST successfully trained 198 staff from 172 sites on the Fitness Skillastics® program. Fitness Skillastics® allowed us to prepare our 5th grade students for the FITNESSGRAM assessment designated by the California State Board of Education. Anecdotal evidence from our sites demonstrates that staff find the training, the kit and the physical activities engaging. This has also resulted in high student involvement in the fitness activities. A tenet of BEST Fit is that students will be more likely to remain healthy and physically active throughout their lives when provided with fitness skills and knowledge at an early age. Fitness Skillastics® is helping us achieve our goals.

Skillastics® Now Featured at California After-School Resource Center (CASRC)

CASRC is offering "free" in-person training in Physical Activity, nutrition, and safety. After school organizations funded in California, by either ASES or 21st CCLC funds are eligible. They can sign-up at the CASRC web site, under training. Skillastics® is being featured in PA-3 (Physical Activity Module 3) Going the Distance. The module looks at activity selection in line with improving the skills measured by the California FitnessGram Testing and broadening and deepening the collaborative relationship after school programs have with their community. Skillastics® was selected because the activities played in the game are based on those same skills and anyone, regardless of their own physical ability, can easily provide an opportunity for their students to practice those skills.
